Arikady, on the estuary

A place to slow down

Rooms look over the water or into the coconut grove. The kayaks go out from the resort’s own bank, and the pool is a few steps from your door.

The Kumbla estuary from the water: green tidal water, a low line of mangroves and coconut palms along the far bank.

Rooms and cottages

River Breeze rooms with balconies over the pool and the water, and cottages set back in the coconut grove.

Two paddlers in orange life jackets in an orange and yellow two-seater sit-on-top kayak on the flat blue-green water of the Kumbla estuary, one paddle raised mid-stroke, with a low sandy shoreline and bare driftwood behind them.

Out on the water

Flat water, sit-on-top kayaks and a guide who goes out with you. Beginners are the point, not the exception. It runs from the resort’s own bank, so guests walk down to it rather than driving somewhere.

The place

What is actually here

Arikady is a village in Kumbla panchayat, on the north bank of the estuary. The resort sits between the water and the road, twelve kilometres from Kasaragod and forty from Mangaluru.

The bank is held by a wall of cut laterite block — the rust-red stone this district is built from, stacked in courses down to the waterline.

The water changes with the season: green and flat in the dry months, running brown after the monsoon. It is a tidal estuary, not a lagoon.

The cottages sit in the grove with their own entrances, and the function ground runs to the far end — the same land, but not the same corner of it.

The property seen from the estuary: a coursed laterite block wall holding the bank, and a tiled roof among the coconut palms behind it.
The entrance walk dressed for a wedding at night: a lit steel arch hung with pink and white flowers and two chandeliers, string lights strung through the palms, printed welcome boards along one side, and the brick paver walk lit warm underfoot.

The place as it is

  • A River Breeze room: a wide bed against a wooden headboard, a red sofa and low table by the window, a split air conditioner and a recessed cove light, with a glass door onto the balcony.
  • The same River Breeze room from the other side, showing the television, the electric kettle on the console and the full-length mirror on the wardrobe.
  • A River Breeze balcony under a slatted canopy: artificial grass, two white lattice chairs and a low wooden table, looking down over the pool and the grounds to the river.
  • A Coconut Groove cottage room: a double bed with a slatted wooden headboard, a tall fluted wardrobe with a mirror, two chairs and a marble floor.
  • The fan-cooled Coconut Groove cottage: a double bed with a curved wooden headboard, a ceiling fan, a wardrobe with a mirror, and a glass door through to the bathroom.
  • The swimming pool, with a wide tiled deck around it, coconut palms overhead and the room block along one side.
  • A paved walk through the grounds under a canopy of trees, with grass set in a chequered pattern between the tiles, gravel on either side, a bench and a bird feeder on the right, and the river showing beyond a low wall.
  • The whole property seen from the middle of the estuary: a long coursed laterite bank wall, mangroves and coconut palms above it, and the buildings set back among the trees under an open blue sky.
